PAND PAC Overview
What is a PAC?
PAND PAC is the political action committee for the Pennsylvania Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The PAC is made up of RDN professionals that represent different regions of Pennsylvania. We strive to channel contributions to election campaigns of worthy political candidates and political committees, who have demonstrated interest and understanding in the views and goals of the committee and the Academy.
Why does PAND PAC need your donation?
As nutrition professionals, we are the experts and we are the most appropriate healthcare professional to provide nutrition services. Further, we deserve insurance reimbursement and recognition for the services that we provide.
We need to make sure that Pennsylvania legislators realize who we are and what we stand for. Having a well-funded PAC serves a number of purposes, all of which benefit Dietitians, Dietetic Technicians and the clients that we serve. To name a few:
- We can make legislators more aware of who we are by making donations and appearances at fundraisers and political events
- We can provide increased visibility to the issues that PAND members care about
- We show that we are politically “up-to-date” and recognize that money is a necessary part of the campaigning and election process.
PAND PAC chooses very carefully who we give donations to- legislators who have supported our interest and our legislative issues in key committee positions.
The PAND PAC Board:
Clancy Harrison- Chairperson
Clancy Harrison is a Pediatric Registered Dietitian and Food Insecurity Expert on a mission to transform the way we approach childhood nutrition in the United States. A catalyst for social change, Clancy challenges outdated feeding practices and ignites the discussion of food access for all children. Her basic principles of dignifying food assistance programs and encouraging children to experience a variety of foods through sensory exploration have the power to transform the health of our next generation.
Clancy is a sought after speaker for Congressional Briefings, live TV segments, and professional seminars. Clancy is the award winning author of Feeding Baby, founder of the Children Feeding Children Greenhouse Project, a frequent guest on the WNEP Live Morning Show, and a TEDx speaker. She served as Past President of Northeast Pennsylvania Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Al Beech West Side Food Pantry. Recently, Clancy received the distinction as a Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Nicole Lefever Keever- Vice Chairperson
Nicole received her BS from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2003 and her MS from University of Bridgeport in 2009. She works primarily with clients with eating disorders and currently owns a private practice. The PAC is important to Nicole because she sees the need for increased insurance reimbursement for nutrition related diagnoses on a daily basis.
Helenkay Smith- Secretary
Helenkay crafts several part-time jobs into one. She is an adjunct faculty member & practicum coordinator/instructor in the Dietetic Program of Community College of Allegheny. In addition, she is the Nutrition Specialist for the Fitness & Wellness Center on the Passavant Retirement Community Campus in Zelienople and works as a community dietitian for Concordia Visiting Nurses. Personal pursuits include music, photography and cooking/baking.
Holly Doan- Treasurer
Holly received her BS from Messiah College in 2012 and graduated from the Penn State Dietetic Internship in 2013. Doan is an in-store Nutritionist for Giant Food Stores in Central Pennsylvania. In this role, she counsels customers on topics from weight loss to food allergies; and also spends much time out in the community providing nutrition education. Doan enjoys her role as treasurer of the PAC and sees the importance of this committee, as it plays a critical role in the future of our profession.
